Laura Travis: Biography and Class Description

BIOGRAPHY

National Board certified Visual Art Educator with 25 years experience teaching, writing
curriculum, and hosting professional development sessions for other teachers. I have taught 10
years at elementary and 12 at high school level for the Providence Public Schools, as well as
originating and hosting classes and lectures in Irish Art, Celtic Stone Carving, soapstone carving,
and community and museum arts for adult participants in a range of settings including Rhode
Island School of Design, Catskills Irish Arts Week, Celtic Roots Festival and Celtic College, Celtic
Women International, International Irish Studies, and as a guest speaker at the Rhode Island
Foundation, Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, Blackstone River Theatre, Roots
Cultural Arts, and for Irish clubs and Hibernian groups around Rhode Island.
As a radio show host since 1982 I have brought traditional music into the homes of Rhode
Islanders and beyond with my continuing, 3 hour Wednesday night program The Celtic Realm.

CRAFT PROJECT OFFERINGS
for Tír na nÓg Children & Youth Program
presented by Laura Travis
Title: Celtic Carving in plaster
Description: No previous experience; students above age
10 may participate (sharp tools and dust masks will be used)
This project is the perfect introduction to carving! Students
will take teacher-prepared plaster plaques and shape and
carve them in relief with a simple and lovely Celtic design,
finishing them off with staining and felt padding or a wall
hanging set up to create wall sculpture, a gift, or a desk
piece as of your fun at the Tír na nÓg Children & Youth
Program. Bring your own ideas or use the many teacher
references; no drawing skill is required. 103_0899

Materials required: small amount of copying, sturdy work tables and chairs, clean up materials
(rags, buckets, brooms)
Weaving Brigid Crosses: No previous experience; Best for students
over age 10.
Make traditional St. Brigid Crosses from soft rushes. Brigid’s crosses are
associated with Brigid of Kildare, who is venerated as one of the patron
saints of Ireland.

Your Initial, Illuminated
Description: No previous experience required; all students
may participate. Using examples from the Book of Kells and
Durrow from the Dover Celtic Coloring Book Series, students
will identify one initial of their name, learn to draw an
illuminated initial large-scale, color with crayons, and
highlight with watercolors to make a crayon batik suitable for
framing.
